African Fat Tailed Gecko Care

African Fat-Taileded Gecko (Hemitheconyx caudicinctus)

Popularity: Make good house pets, very docile. Not as popular as Leopard Geckos, but good pets.Origin: West Africa, Sahara Desert

Native habitat: Dry and arid, but the geckos hide in dark, humid places

Size: 6-10 inches

Lifespan: 15-18 years

Appearance: As per the name, has a fat tail. They have stocky heads and bodies. They are normally brown with tan stripes, and sometimes have a thin, white stripe along the back. Their belly is pale-pink or off-white. Breeding has produced color and pattern variations that include tangerine, albino, pattern-less, white out, and aberrant fat-tails.

Diet: Insects

Activities: African Fat Tails mostly stay inactive to avoid the heat, particularly in the daytime.

Defense Mechanisms: Tails break off to allow escape from predators.

Misc characteristics: Fat is stored in the tail, so they can live on that fat for several days. They are terrestrial and nocturnal.

A 10-gallon aquarium is adequate for housing a male and a female together. Good substrate is newspaper, paper towel, slate, tile or packed coconut fiber. They need to have some hides to feel safe, and they need to have a few plants and some wood in the housing for some variation.

Hides should be on a warm end (88 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit ) and a cool end (mid 70s) of the housing. Heat can be provided by a 40 to 60-watt light bulb. They also need a humid hide. This can be a container such as an old margarine tub with a hole cut in the lid and filled with moist peat moss, sphagnum moss, eco earth, or a paper towel. This helps the gecko to shed properly.

Gut-loadeded crickets, mealworms, superworms, silkworms and small cockroaches are the staple diet in captivity, with a pinkie mouse being a periodic treat. Feed adults every other day, babies every day. Always keep a dish of fresh water in the housing.
